The development of Mr. Crapper’s water closet and urban sewer systems coincides with the ascendance of Victorian priggishness typified by clothing that disguised the body’s true form from head to foot. The gleaming white functional bathroom was perfected in the twenties – a period noted for its crusade against “germs” – those nasty creatures in the Listerine ads.

One wonders how the bacteria that sustain our lives ever survived the rhetoric of the antiseptic hygiene age.
